The Oldest Daughter of a Vietnamese Immigrant Family
Here is the personal statement I submitted to colleges. I wanted to discuss the realization and personal growth I've experienced in reflecting on the resentment I had felt towards my parents for the majority of my childhood. It is titled, "A Reimagined Reign."
Thrive Scholars - Cohort '27
In my junior year, as I watched my senior friends work on their college applications, I couldn't help but worry about the process that would soon become a reality for me. As a first-generation student, turning to my family for support wasn't an option, and the fear of not knowing what to do haunted me. Then, in December of 2021, as I joined a Zoom meeting on my phone on the way home from school on the crowded Green Line, I learned about the six-year program, Thrive Scholars.

Chapter 18: The Final Stretch
As 2022 comes to a close, I have recently turned 18, and I am also finishing up college applications. In Fall 2023, I see myself thriving in college/university (wherever where it may be), so for my last year in high school, I'd like to name this "chapter" of my story "The Final Stretch." I'd also dedicate this story to my wise parents, who have helped me come thus far despite our generational differences.
My Current Rabbit Hole
Lately, I've been reading countless articles and watching numerous videos about the career of a User Experience Designer. Growing up, I transitioned from wanting to be a lawyer, to an eye doctor, and now, finally, I want to be a UX Designer. This is the first time I have felt so passionate about a career, and I would like to take the road that will lead me to it. Read The Design of Everyday Things by Don Norman!
My Hobbies and Interests
Outside of class, work, and community service, I find myself enjoying snowboarding, photography, Graphic Design, and clay-making. I am an art lover and consumer in general, whether that be through film, architecture, literature, etc. In my free time, I also indulge in watching Marvel movies, taking the Sorting Hat test for the hundredth time, playing video-games, and seeking new foods to eat.
